Musical Christmas gifts from children

Like many other musicians (and having musical children) I walk into the next two weeks packed with rehearsals, performances and concerts.

It is so easy to become stressed, anxious and to not remember that Christmas is suppose to be about joy (as I mentioned in my last year’s Christmas blog post).  

Yet, I want to suggest that over these next two weeks we look out for the special musical gifts we can receive from children we teach over this festive period.  

Musical Gifts

I have received so many musical Christmas gifts from the children over the past few weeks, and lots even just today. 

As I looked across their faces, I was very touched, as many children sang their little hearts out. Children walked to the front with pride to sing their solos (many who have never sung solo before). They worked hard to fit in difficult lyrics with melodies, and did all the fun actions when required, standing up and siting down at the right time.

For well over an hour children as young as 7 did everything they could to make the performance the best it could be, as a team of wonderful staff supported me all they could in the rehearsal. It was such a happy hour to spend.

Later that day in orchestra, little children played their instruments with enthusiasm and care. Even though they’d played the music so many times, they still gave it their best.

One child, without prompt, got the children to cheer our lovely conductor.  They thanked me for helping.  It’s such a gift to see children show gratitude for the music education we bring them.  

Last week lots of coloured-in Christmas trees arrived to piano lessons with tags filled with carols that had been practiced and pretty, multi-coloured baubles designed.

All children came prepared with the pieces they will perform at our Christmas concert. As a teacher, I felt truly humbled by the care that had been given in preparing Christmas concert pieces. It was lovely to see the excitement on their faces about the chance to perform for their Mums and Dads in two weeks time.

I think as teachers we should never underestimate the influence for good we can have. Helping children make music changes lives. It builds confidence, provides the opportunity to be creative, and to have a moment to shine and share, either individually or as an ensemble.

While we as teachers play our part in all of this, we receive so much back from them, lots of musical gifts that truly warm our hearts. Yet again I have great gratitude that I am able to be a music teacher.
