The Christmas Shortlist 2026

Pianodao Music Library
Selected and Reviewed by Andrew Eales

There are many reasons why I love Christmas, but without doubt, among the best is the rich and varied tapestry of music we play purely for our enjoyment, and share with others for theirs. Music can and should always bring people together, and at this time of year it perhaps does so more than at any other.

Supporting players, teachers and learners everywhere, the Pianodao Music Library offers in depth reviews of a wide range of seasonally-themed piano publications to suit all tastes and levels of playing.

Each year, my Christmas Shortlist is here to help guide you through this treasure-trove, opening a door to this wealth of wonderful music, guided by level.

Best of all, the list automatically updates whenever titles are added, updated, or replace, so that you can come back throughout the season for the latest and best recommendations. Enjoy the festive season…

As Christmas approaches, it’s natural that anyone playing the piano will want to explore seasonal fare, and there need be no disappointment.

Here are some of the best publications for beginner to elementary players (up to UK Grade 2) who are eager to get into the Christmas spirit…

Intermediate players will continue to enjoy all the publications listed in the Elementary section above, either as ‘quick-win’ pieces, sight reading material, or as a starting point for developing fuller creative arrangements themselves.

Meanwhile, the field of appealing publications significantly opens up at this level, and here are some of my favourite choices:

Calming Christmas Carols for Graded Piano

With so many Christmas-themed piano books on the market, and with yet more appearing to challenge our established favourites each year, it takes something quite special and distinctive to stand out from the crowd. And here it is…

Piano Calm Christmas

While the music in this collection has the Christmas stamp on it throughout, I am happy to report that the piano writing and style of arrangement is in a similar vein to the previous ‘Piano Calm’ book, making this a perfect fusion of seasonal cheer and relaxed piano vibe.
